Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
This is a great class to start with if your learner is a beginner. Sometimes art learners will be painting on white painting paper and sometimes it will be black. We will focus on color mixing and how to use color in your artwork to create a vibrant color filled painting. Art learners will learn about contrasting color, complimentary colors and using darks and lights to add depth and interest. Art learners will paint 5 paintings from start to finish. In the videos each week I will be teaching concepts and easy steps for realistic landscape scenes and painting closer up still life scenes. Art learners will learn about using seasons like fall or spring to bring color into their paintings. As art learners learn to mix colors, they will be able to take what they have learned and apply it in their paintings.

After each lesson I would like to see a picture of their drawing or paintings or at least a message letting me know how it turned out. I always enjoy seeing their artwork and encourage their hard work. I will respond to each message or picture and send a personal message as soon as I can the same day or the next day. My messages will include encouraging learners in areas they did well and anything they need to improve on. Having communication after each lesson gives learners an opportunity to chat about areas they are struggling in. It gives me an opportunity to encourage them as they go. The lessons will get harder and with encouragement and support throughout the lesson's learners won't get discouraged and it builds confidence that they can do it. If I don't hear from your learner, I will send a message and check in after the first week, the third week and the last week before class ends.

There will be one video per lesson and a written explanation of what to expect and how to prepare for the lesson. Your art learner can draw or paint along with me as I demonstrate step by step.

With each lesson there will be an extended learning opportunities and written instructions for this. Some of the extended learning opportunities are designed for more practice on the lesson's topic. Some of them are observations. As an artist you need to observe the subjects that you are painting and drawing to be able to create a realistic look in your artwork. I will also be encouraging art learners to be creative and come up with their own ideas and use this time in between lessons to try out their own ideas.

It is always exciting to see the progression throughout the class while art learners gain confidence and add their own creative ideas. By the end of these 9 lessons, art learners will be able to understand how to use color to add depth and detail to create paintings that come alive. I look forward to seeing all the learner's artwork and assisting in any way that I can.

I look forward to teaching your art learners soon.

Syllabus

9 Lessons
over 9 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Mixing Colors
We are going to start at the beginning and learn about color. I will be teaching about what colors to use for highlights and which ones to use for darker shady areas and how to create interesting colors that we can use in the upcoming paintings.
Lesson 2:
A Vibrant Sunset
We will use all those new colors we mixed last week and incorporate them into our sunset. I will be demonstrating how to blend colors together. Step two will be painting and learning brushstrokes as we paint a silhouette of trees, grass or bushes to finish our painting and add a fun contrast.
Lesson 3:
Planning the Fall Landscape
This lesson we will be drawing and shading as we work on a plan for the painting in lesson 4. I will demonstrate how to create distance and make a plan where the dark and light values will go. I will also demonstrate how to shade lots of different landscape textures like grass, trees and rocks.
Lesson 4:
Painting a Fall Landscape
We will be using our drawing from lesson 3 as our guide for the fall landscape. We will be taking what we planned last week and painting and learning how to use color and values to create distance and realism in our paintings. I will be demonstrating lots of different brush strokes and painting techniques that are easy to learn and incorporate in most landscapes.
