Beginner Level
Each week the class will begin with warming up drawing exercise and then dive straight into the fun drawing lessons. Learners will be given the opportunity to share their work as they complete each part of the lesson. This is a good way to know everyone has completed and understands what is being taught. At the end of each class there will be a practice lesson that will be a way to continue working on what they learned on their own. (It is not something that has to be turned in and completely optional). The goal is to teach these lessons in a fun and easy way that will excite them to do more on their own. The class topics we will focus on are Building a character from starting with head and face designs, learning ways to move the face around to look in different directions, and expressions. Drawing the hair, body , arms and legs. We will learn the basics of applying shadows to the characters with light sources. Learn methods to Coloring with tones. Learning that cartooning animals can be done easy with the same methods used to make human characters. There will be basic lessons to add depth to a drawing using elements of the character or the environment (foreground and background). There will be a basic perspective lesson as well. Once we cover all these lessons we will begin to start building our first comic panel, a comic book cover and then full comic page. I enjoy getting feedback and interaction with the learners throughout the class as well as seeing their progress and giving encouragement. Art is a something that will constantly evolve within each student as they go forward. My goal with this class is to give them the insights and tips that will help them as they pursue their dreams as a comic book artist.
Learning Goals
The students will first learn the basic drawing and creating a character. They will learn how to ink, color and add shadows to their character. There will be some lessons on how to build depth with foregrounds, backgrounds, and basic perspective. With these lessons they will learn to create a comic book panel of their own. They will get a lesson on drawing a create a comic book cover. Using all the knowledge from the entire class they will create their first comic book page based on constructed directions. This will be a great introduction to drawing, cartooning, and comic books.
