Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Follow my interactive demonstration to create a beautiful winter landscape scene, in a style inspired by the famous painter Vincent van Gogh! This is a one-session class that will end with each student having created their own unique masterpiece.

We'll begin class by viewing the Van Gogh's famous "Starry Night" and sketching out our own designs on our papers. Learners then follow my step-by-step demonstration to create their own beautiful artwork! We'll draw each part and then fill it in with color and texture to mirror Van Gogh's signature style. Although instructions are quite detailed, students are encouraged to add their own creative touches to their work!

The recommended supply list for this class is:
oil pastels and a piece of black construction paper.
*More details, and an alternate list for those who wish to paint, may be found in the "learner supply list" below.
Learning Goals
Students will practice drawing or painting in a style inspired by the Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, and will create a scene that exhibits movement, texture, depth, and overlapping.

Supply List
This project may be created with either drawing or painting supplies! The use of either will result in a beautiful artwork, so it is entirely the artist's preference which one to use, although drawing is recommended for beginners. I will include both options here:

Drawing supply list:
- Black or dark blue paper (around 9x12")
- Oil pastels (recommend Pentel or Cray-Pas, both available on Amazon, or at art supply stores for under $10)

Painting supply list:
- Canvas or thick paper, PAINTED BLACK OR DARK BLUE (for best results!), around 9x12"
(Watercolor paper may be used-- thicker is better)
Both canvases and watercolor pads are available from Amazon or at art supply stores, for under $10.
- Acrylic paints or craft paints (available from Amazon or at art supply stores, for under $10).
Colors needed include: white, black, blue, green, yellow, & red.
- Paint brush(es), small/medium in size (available from Amazon or at art supply stores, for under $5)
- water cup, paper plate (for mixing colors), paper towels
 1 file available upon enrollment

I have taught some version of this lesson in my classes for at least the past ten years! This style of painting or drawing is very accessible, and my students are often pleasantly surprised at how well their artwork turns out. My demonstration is easy to follow, but still allows students to experiment and add a personal touch to their work. This has always been one of my favorite projects to display in my classroom, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I always do!
