Class Experience

Artists have a lot in common with scientists. They both observe, document, discover and problem-solve. In this class we will learn about different topics in science through drawing. We will create 4 different drawings exploring scientific concepts or phenomena in an abstract way. We will be working from both observation and imagination.

The class is structured as follows: 10 minutes for check in and slide presentation which may include: art history, brief scientific intro, art instruction and photo reference, 35 minutes for drawing, 5 minutes for sharing/clarification.

The class integrates the science and the arts, incorporating basic science concepts and the elements and principles of art (such as: geometric shapes, line, pattern, organic shapes, pattern and perspective).
Class lesson plan sequence (listed by Art Concept/Science Concept)

1) 3-D shapes/Crystals: Learn about different types of crystals and then draw them as 3-D shapes.
2) Organic Shapes/ Botanical Journals: Learn about different types of flower forms as organic shapes and then create a small journal documenting them.
3) Organic Shapes/Depth/Topography Maps: Learn about topography maps and then create a map of an imaginary landscape.
4) Patterns/ Animal Drawings in Camouflage: Learn about pattern and camouflage in nature and then create a drawing of an animal in camouflage.

As the instructor I will set up a second camera. Students may watch and follow along with me or interpret the subject in their own way. This class is intended to be a fun and supportive exploration of art and science.
