Don't Bake That Gingerbread Man!- A Spelling Game for Young Learners

Students will guess letters to try to figure out a word puzzle. They will need to guess the right letters and if they don't the Gingerbread will bake. We all know what happens when we bake a mischievous gingerbread man!

Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
In this entertaining 30 minute class, students will practice spelling words by playing a fun game. Students will take turns guessing letters until they have spelled the word. If the students guess a letter that is not in the word, the teacher will draw a part of the gingerbread man. Be careful! If the gingerbread man is drawn in its entirety, the game will restart with a new word.

At the beginning of class, we will have introductions and then I will explain how to play the game. I will draw lines indicating empty spaces. Then as the students guess letters, I will either place letters on the spaces or I will draw part of the gingerbread man depending on what letters the students guess and whether or not those letters are in the word. Students will take turns guessing letters until the word is spelled, and then we will move on to another word. The teacher will provide lots of guidance and will encourage students to take turns. The teacher will show students how to be good sports when playing a game.

Students should be able to identify letters. It is helpful to know the sounds of the letters and to be able to read some words. Students can still enjoy the game by identifying letters and contributing to the making words.

I am the type of teacher that encourages her students and teaches her students in a nurturing atmosphere. I want all my students to feel included in the learning community. I am willing to work with any family that may have specific words to practice spelling.
