In this exciting yet informative course, we are diving deep into canine psychology. Students will learn about the four states of mind that a dog is capable of being in at any given time. Those states are: fight, flight, avoidance and submission. As a dog trainer and rehabilitation specialist, we often see children getting bit by dogs. The parents and children both wonder what possibly went wrong! The answers are in this class (in addition to safety tips!) The patterns of canine psychology covered in this class will explain how dogs perceive and respond to the world around them. For us humans, it is critical that we learn how to properly understand and lead our dogs! It is never too early to begin learning about your relationship and also your responsibilities when it comes dog ownership! ****PLEASE NOTE: There is a 4-student class minimum. If a section does not reach 4 enrollments, it will be rescheduled.***
Learning Goals
Students will have a thorough understanding of canine psychology as it relates to fight, flight, avoidance and submission.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Amber and I am a homeschooling mom of a wonderful 9 year old daughter. While raising my daughter, I attended McNeese State University where I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor's degree in sociology. I also possess a private investigation's license through the State of Louisiana and have worked as a fraud consultant for the state as well. With that, however, I have a passion for working with animals and attended Duke University online for a certification program in canine cognition and emotion. I have attended countless seminars, workshops and certification courses. In 2016, I founded a German Shepherd rescue which now operates nationwide. in 2016, I also followed my passion to work with animals and now own/operate a canine training and rehabilitation facility. We also offer doggy daycare and boarding!
Through Outschool, I will be teaching canine-related classes. As an animal advocate both by profession and heart, I feel very strongly about educating dog owners on the dynamics of the canine/human relationship. I will be teaching extremely important topics such as canine safety 101 and canine psychology as well as canine behavior and body language. I will also be teaching fun and exciting courses such that introduce basic obedience at home!
I believe that we need to take proper care of animals and foster a mutually respectful relationship based on trust and communication. Children who love and are passionate about animals should be able learn about the amazing career fields that involve working with animals on a daily basis! As a homeschooling parent myself, I understand the importance of electives classes and fostering a child's interests and passions.
When not working dogs or teaching, I am very passionate about horseback riding. After not riding for nearly a decade, I decided to take riding lessons to learn from the ground, up!
