The Little Mermaid is a classic fairytale. Originally written by Hans Christian Andersen, it was adapted into a popular Disney animated film, and then adapted again into a popular Disney live-action film. In this class, we will discuss the differences between the original story (with less of a happy ending) and the animated film, and then get into the Twisted Tale, which explores the idea: What if Ariel had not defeated Ursula the Sea Witch?

For this class, you will need a copy of "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen. I recommend "The Little Mermaid and Other Fairy Tales: MinaLima Edition," because it's gorgeous and you can get it used in hardback for a good price. However, any copy, as long as it's the true original, will do.

You will also need access to the Little Mermaid animated movie from Disney, as well as the graphic novel, "Part of Your World," by Stephanie Kate Strohm.

Before the first class, you will need to have read the Hans Christian Andersen story.

Week 1: Discuss the original fairytale, The Little Mermaid, and recognize story elements, such as plot, characters, etc.
Week 2: Discuss the differences between the Little Mermaid fairytale and the animated film.
Week 3: Discuss "Part of Your World," and its place as an alternate ending to the Disney version.
Week 4: We will share our own alternate endings to Disney's the Little Mermaid.
Learning Goals
