Diving Into Summer Reading for the Struggling Reader
In this two week course, students will complete the reading and discussion of a YA novel and learn strategies to guide them to success for the next school year.

US Grade 6 - 8
Class 1: Making Inferences and Supporting with Text Evidence - Students learn what an inference is, the components required to make an inferences, and supporting their inferences with relevant textual evidence. Class 2: Analyzing a Character - Students learn to closely examine a character's actions, thoughts, feelings, speech, and reactions to others to gain a deep understanding of the character's personality. Class 3: Understanding the Conflict - Students gain the knowledge of what a conflict is and how it is used to progress a story and impact the characters. Class 4: Examining the Plot - Students take a look at the overall plot of a text and how the aspects of it are interwoven. Class 5: Understanding the Author's Message - Students look at all aspects to understand how an author using them collectively to convey a message to readers. Class 6: Writing about Text - Students learn to use their understanding of a text to provide a thorough, well-planned, and supported response to text. Each class with be taught using an interactive style with specialized handouts and hands-on practice.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their comprehension of text by focusing on the aspects of the text that authors intertwine to convey a message.
