Class Experience

***SPECIAL NOTE: For those who have participated in the Mini or Jr. Dance Camps previously, please note that there are now 3 levels of this Camp to provide an even better experience by focusing on smaller age ranges. The name of your class may have changed since you were last enrolled.***

Dance through the streets with Mal, Evie, Carlos, Jay, and Friends in this Disney’s Descendants Dance Camp! We use the many dance numbers from this trilogy of movies as the inspiration for our own choreography that will be set to one or more of the songs from Descendants 1, 2, or 3 and the remixes.

This is a super fun 3-day dance camp for those who just love the Disney Descendants songs and movies. Learners will learn moves for one dance that we will present at the end of the last meeting. I will present original choreography as well as use some ideas from the movies. Students will also be given a chance to add their own freestyle moves into the final dance. This is a high-energy class and I instruct in a highly verbal way - I often use storytelling and imagery to help students learn and recall choreography quickly.

Day 1: Start dance choreography - this is the biggest day of new instruction!
Day 2: Add on to the dance choreography and rehearse
Day 3: Finish up the dance and prepare to present our dance*

*Learners are not required to have an audience present on the last day. They can create their own "audience" of dolls, toys, or stuffed animals if they wish. Also, they can dance along to the class recording to perform for the family at a later time, if preferred.

Here's how we will spend our time:
 - 10 minutes - connection time, talking about Descendants!
 - 30-35 minutes - warm-ups & dance instruction
 - 5 minutes - dance game as time allows

Each class begins with a time to check in and get to know each other. Then, we begin dancing with a warm-up, an introduction of new/featured steps, and a review of those previously taught. These steps are the component of the larger dance that serves as the choreography goal of this camp.

Experience:
No prior experience required. We will begin at an Adv. Beginner level and progress according to the level of each particular group.
*FYI - I also have camps for both younger and older students with some overlapping ages. Disney Descendants Tween Dance Camp for ages 9-13 features choreography that is more advanced than this Jr. Dance Camp, so 9 & 10-year-olds who are fairly new to dance or prefer a slightly slower pace would generally be better placed in the younger section. For learners preferring a more introductory experience, please check out the Mini Dance Camp.

Preparation & Best Practices:
Plan to join the class 5 minutes early. I recommend that you position your camera so that I can clearly view your whole body, if possible. This helps me to monitor progress and give specific feedback. Have water available, and be sure to dress appropriately for movement. Either sweatpants or leggings would be a good choice for movement.

If you don't see a date or time you like, be sure to contact me with your requests. I am planning to add more sessions during the holidays, so please email directly with your requests and let me know YOUR time zone (FYI-I am teaching from PST).

Also, let me know if you are looking for private classes for groups or individuals - private lessons can be a terrific way to accelerate progress!
Learning Goals
The goal of this camp is to learn a super fun dance to a favorite Descendents’ tune. Along the way, here are some other skills and attitudes I am hoping will develop: the ability to count music, increased movement vocabulary, memory skills, willingness to ask questions, ability to respond to specific instructions/corrections, and an overall growth mindset as applied to dance.
