Class Experience

This class is the first half of third grade math. Part 2 is the second half of a full year of third grade math. This class is most appropriate for students at a third grade level in mathematics.

In this 16 week course focusing on the first half of third grade math, students focus on place value, multiplication, beginning geometry, area, perimeter, represent and interpret data, money management, and fractions.

This course focuses on gaining and recognizing which strategies to use while working at the pace best for each group of students. Students try to generate their own strategies before being shown old and new style math approaches. Each class focuses on the strategies that work best for each particular group of students.

Each class utilizes a variety of tools like discussion, visual presentations, games, songs, hands-on activities, videos, and stories to engage students and enhance learning.

Each class meeting follows the schedule/flow below:

Mathmetician Minute
*Go over homework
* Confidence building exercise

Fraction Party
*We use this portion of the class to learn about and study fractions. This is a very beginning introduction to what fractions are.

Data Collection
*A different question is posed to the entire class and the answers are collected in numerous types of graphs and charts including pie charts, bar graphs, pictographs, etc.
*Students analyze the results individually then discuss as a group.

Multiplication
*Study the multiplication facts 0-10, focusing on what multiplication is as opposed to JUST focusing on memorization. Numerous memorization techniques and tricks are used throughout our multiplication studies.

Beginning Personal Finance Game
*This is a single round of one game played throughout the 16 weeks. Students learn about managing their money by rolling the dice and the teacher drawing the appropriate card. That card dictates a certain action where the student will earn or lose money. Students use their Math Notebook to record how much money they have.
*This is NOT merit based participation, meaning students do not earn a turn at the game. Everyone gets to play.

Geometry
*Identifying shapes including 2d and 3d shapes
*Perimeter, area, and volume calculations using numerous strategies

Mathmetician Meeting
*Our class ends with our meeting where I introduce students to their (very easy, self guided) homework assignment by giving explicit instructions and then modeling to the students exactly how to complete their homework. Instructions for all homework assignments are also always posted in our OS classroom. Homework can include practicing their 5 facts while doing a midline activity, explaining to a stuffed animal what perimeter is, and a meaningful worksheet.
*Each class ends with our Math Motto. I tell the students I believe in them and ask them if they believe in themselves. This is used throughout our classes as a confidence building technique.
