Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
I will model and students will practice a variety of idea generating writing activities. The purpose of the journaling is to allow learners to explore personal beliefs, knowledge, and experiences in order to make discoveries about themselves and understand their connections with others and about their world. This collection of ideas will open the door to future writing with varied topics and purposes. As I present each activity, I will share my thinking that prepares me to write before providing the time for the students to practice themselves. Learners will have the opportunity to share journal responses with one another, but sharing is optional.
Learning Goals
Students will recognize the importance of exploring multiple ideas as a writer before limiting themselves to a specific topic and purpose for writing. This idea generating encourages writers to get all of their ideas down, thus preventing them from eliminating good ideas too quickly because of too much focus too soon in the writing process.

In my classes, I share my love of reading and writing with students. After 30 years as a reading and language arts educator in Texas public schools, I retired while I still loved what I did every day.Throughout those 30 years, I served as a classroom teacher, an instructional reading and writing coach, and an instructional specialist. While I enjoyed coaching teachers and developing engaging lessons, my most rewarding moments included creating success with students. I am grateful for the amazing journey I had, and I am still passionate about teaching and learning. As I continue this next chapter of my teaching life, I embrace the opportunities that allow me to be forever a teacher.
I strongly believe educators provide every learner the opportunity to succeed. The key to providing that opportunity is recognizing that each learner is an individual with a unique learning style. A successful educator has a repertoire of teaching strategies that allow each student to reach his potential and succeed. My passion for reading and writing fuels the students’ growth as learners.
While I've called myself a teacher for over 30 years, I also call myself a wife and mom. My two oldest sons are adults, and my youngest son is a college student. Our rescue dog Kipper rounds out our family.
