Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Waterfalls have always fascinated people. From their majestic beauty and power to the daredevils that attempt to go over them. In this class, we will learn about Niagara Falls, using the "Where Is Niagara Falls?" book by Megan Stine as a basis for our studies. It is not required to have this book for class, but some learners may find it useful to read along with each lesson.

In this 7 week class, we will learn:

Class 1 - Geography - How were the falls made? What is the land around it like?
Class 2 - History of different groups of Indigenous Peoples who lived near the falls.
Class 3 - Who were the first Europeans to see the falls? Who bought Goat Island and built the town?
Class 4 - Who tried building a bridge over the falls and why did they fail? How did it connect the U.S. and Canada?
Class 5 - Who were some of the people who tried to walk over the falls on a tightrope or go over in a barrel and why did they do it?
Class 6 - Waterwheels, Tesla, and Edison - using the falls for power and the founding of the Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power and Manufacturing Company
Class 7 - A look at different tourist draws to the falls and different trivia. We will play a Kahoot trivia game to close out the class.

Each week, by Wednesday evening (9pm PST) -

-I will email each student a link that weeks lecture and assignments. This will be on YouTube and is in a private account that is embedded into the Outschool classroom page.
- Assignments will consist of discussion and essay questions, short research topics, Youtube videos, and worksheets. These will be posted on the classroom page.
- In my flex classes, each family can determine the level of participation in the course.
- Communication will be done through the Outschool classroom.
-I will check in with each student several times during the week to check on progress of the homework, address any questions, or to engage in a discussion about the topic covered. Each student is encouraged to message (through the Outschool classroom) me anytime they have any questions or thoughts about the class.
- Each week, there may be additional articles, videos, or pictures that will be posted to the classroom page to engage students in open conversations about that weeks topic.
-Please message me before the start of class if you have any questions.
