Class Experience

In this class, we will learn about the amazing Harry Houdini using the book by Tui T Sutherland, "Who Was Harry Houdini?"
Students will learn:

Class 1 -Introduction - Chapter 3 (pages 1-26) Immigrating to the US; Interest in magic
Class 2 - Chapter 4-6 (pages 27-55) Different types of tricks; Becoming famous
Class 3 - Chapter 7-9 (pages 56-76) Becoming a movie star; Performing Illusions; Harrys family and friendships
Class 4 - Chapter 10-12 (pages 77-95) Exposing the truth; His legacy


Each week, we will talk about how he became interested in magic, how he improved his act and skills, and how the public reacted to him. We will all learn one (small) magic trick each week, with the students learning one on their own and performing them in front of the class on the last day. 

Each week, students will be given a variety of assignments, including:

Word hunts
Fill in the blanks
Instructions for small magic tricks
Short films to watch

In this class we will learn and discuss his strengths and weaknesses, his rise to fame, and how he did his magic tricks.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
In this class, we will discuss how Harry died (an ruptured appendix from a blow to his abdomen) and his involvement in spiritualism (seances). This will be covered only as it is in the book (at an age appropriate manner) and we will discuss how Harry did not believe in it and tried to expose those that practiced it. There may be some Youtube videos that are seen during this class. I will share my screen and learners will not need to access them on their own.
Supply List
All supplies needed for magic tricks will be basic, ordinary household items that will be listed on the classroom page the day before class begins.
