Class Experience

My Basic Photography Class for Beginners is highly recommended as a prerequisite for this class.

*Depending on the number of students in each class, class sessions may be adjusted by 5-10 minutes.*

Each week, we will start with a class meeting via Zoom, where students will learn the topic of the week. Classes meet once a week and students will be given an assignment during each class session to complete before the next session. If students are comfortable, they may share their photography with each other during this time. If students do not wish to share their photos with the class, they are not required to. However, this is a good opportunity for feedback and growth. We will focus on positive reinforcement. Then we will discuss the next assignment.

*Interested in one of my classes but don't see a time that fits your schedule? Please ask! I'm willing to work with you to set up a time that works for you!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to take their camera out of auto and into manual mode. This will allow them more control over the photos they take. They will be able to see the lighting used in a photo, set up a well-balanced and interesting photo. They will be able to effectively analyze and provide feedback for peer photos.

Lesson 1:
Exposure Triangle
We will discuss aperture, ISO, and shutter speed and how these aspects work together to effect exposure.
Assignment: Take your camera out of auto mode and put it in M or Manual mode. Adjust aperture, ISO, and shutter speed separately to see how they effect your photos. Make note of what your settings are so that you can share them with the class and we will discuss.

Lesson 2:
Bokeh
We will discuss how we use aperture and zoom to create a bokeh effect on photos. We will also discuss how we will need to adjust the other aspects of the exposure triangle when we change our aperture.
Assignment: Set your aperture to as low as it will go and take photos to achieve a blurry background. Don't forget to save your settings.

Lesson 3:
Shutter Speed
We will discuss how shutter speed effects our photos and how to use this to create special effects in our photos. Some of the effects we will discuss are water features, light streaks, and sports photos. We will also discuss how we will need to adjust the other aspects of the exposure triangle when we use a slow shutter speed.
Assignment: Use shutter speed to create a special effect in your photo. Be sure to save your settings!

Lesson 4:
Taking Photos in Low Light Situations
We will discuss how we can change the settings in our camera to maximize the lighting in darker situations. Discussion will include adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and the pros and cons of using each of these as a priority.
Assignment: Take a photo in low light but make sure that it is properly exposed. Feel free to use additional lighting on your subject but adjust your settings to get the effect you want. Save your settings to share.

I've been a teacher in a traditional classroom since 2002. During that time, I have experience with pre-K through 8th grade. To further my interest in photography, I completed the New York Institute of Photography courses and received my certificate of completion in 2006. I've also completed several online training to strengthen my skills. I have photographed weddings, real estate, and portraits professionally but I absolutely love photographing nature and macro shots!
