Welcome to Game Design 4 Kids, the perfect program for budding game designers in grades 2-4! In this course, participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of video game development and design their own games using kid-friendly developer tools.

The course will run for 8 weeks, with 55 minute long class meetings, and will be delivered in a student-centered learning environment, where collaborative projects are highly encouraged. This means that your child will have plenty of opportunities to interact with both their peers and the instructor.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to cover the main topics in game design and development, including exploring and designing platform-style 2D game experiences, understanding 2D game design principles, defining iterative design in game development, identifying elements that make fun gameplay, and understanding platforming elements in games.

Throughout the course, participants will learn through a range of teaching styles, including lectures, interactive games, slides, and discussions. Our instructor will be on hand to answer any questions and guide participants through the design process.
Week 1 - Learn about game design and what makes games fun, Learn to identify game design using examples from the arcade, Find out what it takes to plan and storyboard a game. Start building your first game in Bloxels.
Week 2 - Learn how to design and animate your own video game character. Learn more about Bloxels game designing tool.
Week 3 - Learn how to design a new levels in Bloxels, Learn the ins and outs of the different tools in the Game Builder for creating your games. Start creating more challanging levels.
Week 4 - Learn about fun & frustration in game design, Learn how perils, puzzles, and prizes can motivate players, Explore enemy customization and safe zones, Create challenges in your game levels that your players will be able to complete and give rewards such as collectibles or safe zones for doing so.
Week 5 - Design and decorate your art & background assets,Publish your game and share with others for feedback, Give feedback to other game designers and use your own to help
Week 6 - Take some pointers from your classmates and do another iteration of your game.

Week 7 and week 8-  Create a new game and add features you haven't added to your other game and complete your games using all the tools and elements we learned about during this course. Share your finished game with the group.


No previous experience or knowledge is required for this course. Our instructor will walk participants through the basics of game design and development, ensuring that everyone has a solid understanding of the key concepts before moving on to more complex topics.

At the end of the course, participants will have created their very own 2D platform-style video game. They will also have gained valuable skills in game design, development, and collaboration, which will serve them well in the future.

We believe that learning should be fun and engaging, which is why we've designed this course to be interactive and collaborative. Our goal is to create a fun and engaging learning experience that will ignite your child's passion for game design and development.

Parental Guidance
We are using a online tool called Bloxels. https://www.bloxels.com/education. This is an education tool that is designed to help students use their imagination and build games about any topic. They also practice their story telling skills. Along the way, they practice the 4Cs of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking on their journey to becoming fluent digital creators. We will provide you with an account.
