Course Description: This writing class is designed to empower 6th to 8th graders with the essential tools for enhancing their writing abilities, grammar, vocabulary, and cultivating a passion for reading. Through a combination of personalized instruction and group engagement, students will develop practical skills to produce meaningful written work with real-world value. Course Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to: Improve their fine writing skills and grammar usage. Enhance vocabulary and language expression. Cultivate motivation for reading and engaging with literature. Craft well-structured and relevant written papers. Collaborate effectively within a group learning environment. Materials: Required books Binder, lined paper, pencils, highlights. Weeks 1-4: Exploring Literary Texts - Introduction to the course, objectives, and expectations. RL.6.1: Inferences and supporting thoughts from text. RL.6.2: Identifying themes and messages using text details. RL.6.3: Analyzing plot sequences and character development. Reading and discussing short stories or excerpts from novels. Initial discussion and reflection on themes and character evolution. Assignment: Write about character development in "Lion of Mars." Weeks 5-8: Unraveling Informational Texts - RI.6.1: Drawing inferences and supporting thoughts from informational text. RI.6.2: Identifying central ideas and summarizing. RI.6.3: Analyzing introduction, development, and illustrations in informational texts. Reading and analyzing articles, news pieces, or nonfiction selections. Engaging in discussions about central ideas and text structures. Assignment: Create a summary of the central ideas in "Front Desk." Weeks 9-12: Mastering Writing Skills - Introduction to argumentative writing and clear reasoning. W.6.1: Crafting arguments with clear reasons and relevant evidence. W.6.1.B: Supporting claims using appropriate sources. W.6.1.C: Using wording to explain relationships between claims and reasons. Developing argumentative essays on relevant topics. Peer reviews and discussions on argument structure and evidence presentation. Assignment: Write an argumentative essay on a chosen topic. Weeks 13-14: The Art of Communication - Effective participation in discussions and building on ideas. SL.6.1: Participating in different discussion types about 6th-grade topics. SL.6.1.A: Using examples and evidence from texts to enhance discussions. SL.6.1.D: Reflecting on others' ideas and different perspectives. Use textual evidence to create a persuasive paper.
