55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one time class, students will begin by listening to the book "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen. As we read, we will look for the plot within the story and find the beginning, middle, and end. We will then discuss how the author created a flow of events throughout the story in order to capture the reader's attention. Students will have the opportunity to work on their own story map as they create a beginning, middle, and end to their story through pictures and words. If your student is just starting out with writing a story, this a great class to help them get organized. This is also a great class for any student who is "stuck" in their story and needs to find the next step in where it is going. Students are encouraged, but not required, to bring any pre-writing activities or even a work in progress with them to help when we take time to create our story maps. The class will wrap up with some time to share our work for peer and teacher review, and for questions and answers. I hope to see you in class soon!

Teacher expertise and credentials
This class is one session of an ongoing class that I recently taught at our homeschool co-op. During my time as a public school teacher, writing was one of my favorite subjects to teach my students. My Master's degree is in elementary literacy and I love helping students develop their ideas into a strong writing piece. Many times, students get "stuck" in their writing and can't figure out where to go next. By looking at a children's picture book and connecting the flow of the story to their own writing, students will be able to "see" where their story is going. This is a great class for anyone who is struggling to get their student started on a writing piece or for anyone who has a student struggling to see where their piece is going. If you enjoy this class, please check out my other classes that surround creative writing! I like to offer the classes separately, as one time classes, so that parents and students can pick and choose which lessons they feel they need. If your child has no problem coming up with characters, then you can simply skip over that lesson! If you feel like they need help developing a conflict and resolution, then sign up for that session. If you want your child to go completely through the process of writing a story, then I would love to see him/her in all of my creative writing classes. I hope to see your student soon!
