This ongoing course supports the development of early literacy skills and helps learners build a strong foundation to become successful readers. The overall focus of this course is on phonological awareness and phonics which are two essential components to becoming a capable, confident, and fluent reader. Each lesson is packed full of learning opportunities while also incorporating a theme and a storyline to make it extra fun for students. I begin class by introducing learners to a mystery...
Students will learn how to: - identify if two words rhyme - blend individual sounds in words - segment words by saying each sound they hear - manipulate words by changing or omitting sounds that they hear - blend and read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words in word families
In addition to the course content, I also provide a printable extension activity each week. This extension activity is not mandatory, however, it is available to students to extend their learning outside of class.
Please bring a pencil, and paper (or a whiteboard) as well as the printable activity for each class. The printable will be available for download at the beginning of each week. If students are unable to print this, I will ask them to participate by writing on a whiteboard or blank piece of paper instead. Alternatively, they can use their finger to print in the air. I will also provide an additional extension activity each week which you may print off. This extension activity is not mandatory, however, it is available to students to extend their learning outside of class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
