The class begins with reading Grandfather Counts by Andrea Cheng. We will play charades to test our comprehension of this beautiful book. We will use the travel theme in this book to jump into a geography lesson full of discussion, map skills, a song, and finishing off with a great game of charades. We will learn that the land masses of our world are called continents, where they are located, their names, and a simple song to help us remember the names of each continent. Using mapping skills we will locate a few cities, mountains, and The Great Wall in China and add them to a map (the link for the map will be provided). Our interactive power point will help us discover what types of transportation we can use to travel between China and the United States as well as the time involved with each mode of transportation.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to geography skills such as mapping, continent and country identification, and modes of transportation; as well as reading comprehension.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I am Hope Brown. I have been teaching professionally and voluntarily for more than 30 years. My teaching experience includes homeschooling three of my four children, two of our six grandchildren, as well as many children in our homeschool co-ops. I have also been a scout leader with Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, and American Heritage Girls for nineteen years. Teaching children is my passion and I love to teach on a wide range of topics from cooking over an open fire to historical figures of the Civil War. I believe that children learn best when they are involved in what they are learning through interactive classes and hands on projects. I look forward to seeing you in class.
