Decimal Addition Practice: Build a Custom Snowman

A fun an engaging way to learn decimal math! Students will spend the session designing their own snowman using a provided shopping list and outline. They will add and subtract decimals to show how they spent their budget.

Assessment
Learner progress will be assessed during the independent portion of this class, when students are working on their Snowman shopping list. Final outcome will be assessed at the end of class with the final project.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
We will begin class with an introduction to the math activity. We will quickly review strategies for adding and subtracting decimals, then we will look at some sample snowmen to brainstorm how we might spend our allotted budget. Students will have 15 minutes to design their Squishmallow, with support from the teacher to check their math and ensure they are accurately adding and subtracting their decimals. Finally, we will share our projects and show our mathematical thinking. We will wrap up with a quick review of the math skills learned and say goodbye!

Supply List
A 2 page handout will be provided in PDF form and should be printed prior to taking class for best results. The math and activity can be duplicated on a blank sheet of paper, but it is best to have the PDF.
