Debate 201: Intermediate Debate

Welcome veteran debaters! In this three-day course, students will further develop their debate skills by learning to evaluate evidence, track contentions, and effectively cross examine opponents.

Class Experience

This three-day course will further develop the argumentation skills that students already possess through active coaching and competitive Public Forum Debate rounds.  

Day 1: Researching and evaluating evidence. Effective note-taking to track contentions. Cross examination and rebuttal exercises. Students will be paired into teams for Day 2 and given a debate resolution to research. 

Day 2: Partner prep. Full 2v2 Public Forum Debate round. Post-round coaching with a focus on evaluating evidence and impact weighing. Teams will be switched and a new debate resolution will be given for Day 3.

Day 3: Partner Prep & Final 2v2 Tournament.

This course is only available for students who have completed a 1-week summer debate camp (third party camps are completely acceptable), OR students who have completed Debate 101 & 102, OR students with competitive Public Forum, Parliamentary or Policy Debate experience.

Learning Goals

By the end of the course, students will be able to advocate for the relative strength of their evidence and impacts while also tracking contentions through the entire debate round.

Welcome!

We're a very small team of educators who strongly believe in the transformational power of debate. We find that when debaters are having fun and working together as a team, they readily find the motivation to unpack even the most rigorous and academically challenging topics. This then translates to debaters having substantially more confidence and intellectual curiosity to create great ideas and then really share them with the world.

Our current and former competitive debaters have competed at the highest levels, with many of our students reaching and even winning nationals in Public Forum, Policy, LD and Parliamentary Debate. 

Even more importantly, we find that well-coached and moderated debates are an enormously powerful tool for learners. Having the ability and confidence to share ideas, defend ideas, and expose weaknesses in ideas is something that can truly carry students throughout their entire lives - as does having the wisdom and humility to change your mind and realize that everyone is sometimes mistaken.
