Class Experience

Several students who have taken my class D&D 102 have requested a way to keep playing. D&D 103 is a long term campaign set in a shonen anime setting. Students will bring in their characters, make choices, work as a team, and roleplay to overcome the challenges of the titular South Street Academy.

Students can bring their custom made character from D&D 101 or Character Creation Tutoring to use in the campaign.

Each session will begin with a setting and area description by the Dungeon Master, detailing the location the characters are in and if they have any non-player characters to interact with. After that students will role play their characters, acting out their personalities and making choices of what to do next. They will explore the setting, interacting with non-player characters acted out by the DM. Some will be peaceful and helpful, others aloof, and some openly hostile. When hostile non-player characters attempt to stop them by force, the player characters will be forced to fight using the Pathfinder 2 TTRPG system. They will then apply their characters' abilities and skills to overcome the obstacles in their path. They will have to work together and creatively to be able to navigate all of the challenges and continue to save the day!

Flow of gameplay begins with DM narration, and then each player taking a turn consisting of three actions that can be used to move, interact or fight in any combination. Non player characters also get turns and are run by the DM. Actions with any possibility of failure are executed by rolling a twenty-sided die and adding relevant bonuses according to the character's statistics. Strategic and creative options can offer additional bonuses that reward characters for intelligent and creative decision making. In combat, fights continue until either all of the enemy characters are reduced to zero hit points, all of the player characters are reduced to zero hit points, or conflict is ended via some other action.

This campaign will take place in a special school called South Street Academy. This school has some very unique approaches to general education, and more than a few secrets to uncover. Players will have the unique challenge of playing their character as a student, and as a combatant using a "soul form." This will allow them to play orc barbarians, elf wizards, and the like in the context of a contemporary school setting. General inspiration for this setting comes from shonen anime (Japanese cartoons known for stylistic animation and action. )

Students are required to have a knowledge of how to play the Pathfinder 2 TTRPG system, which is taught in my prior class of D&D 101.
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with the experience of playing a D&D campaign, using strategic thinking, teamwork, and creativity to overcome all obstacles in their path.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
There will be stylized violence in the form of casting spells and swing swords, though it will not be graphic in nature. In addition, several non-player characters have learning differences like dyslexia and ADHD, and tolerance and understanding of these differences may come up as a topic during the course of the campaign.
Supply List
Students will need to have characters prepped before session one. I highly recommend they use the character sheets that will be posted in the classroom to record their character's details. Dice are not required, as students will be asked to use Roll20 to roll their dice digitally to prevent fudging dice rolls. A pencil will be necessary to record changes as characters level up.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from University of Missouri-St. Louis
I have played campaigns in D&D 5E, Pathfinder 1 and 2, Call of Cthulhu, and Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition. I have served as Dungeon Master for a completed campaign using Pathfinder 1. I have also run a test one shot using a tabletop role playing system of my own experimental design.

For about 3-4 years I used to substitute teach at a unique school for students with learning differences, so I hope to be able to bring the compassion and understanding I learned while working there to dealing with that topic during this campaign. (If it comes up.)
