Learning Goals
Students will learn classic stories about the Greek gods and mythical characters, will gain much new rich vocabulary, and build a list of gods and locations found throughout this study. Additionally, they will make connections between some of these stories/characters and our modern sayings.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Greek mythology is filled with quite the variety of characters. Some of them are kind and harmless, while others do have menacing and sometimes violent traits. Their unkind acts will be discussed. Please view the Common Sense Media recommendation for more information. (Common Sense Media Review: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/daulaires-book-of-greek-myths)
Quizlet links will be used during our sessions to allow students opportunities to practice vocabulary with games, and to take quick vocabulary quizzes. Students' scores will not be shared with other students. They will only be seen by the individual student (and me), and will not be used as grades. Whether in-session games or quizzes, these will generally be done in five-minute time frames. No Quizlet account is required.
Supply List
I will provide weekly documents, links, etc. These will be in our classroom the evenings before the beginnings of our week every week. Students will need to either borrow the book, "D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths" (Ingri and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire) from the library or purchase a copy. When I was growing up, we traveled a lot, and I always looked forward to a new trip because my mother would buy a new stack of books for me. I would sit for hours in the back seat of our car and read. Whenever I ran out of books to read, I would read the billboards and every highway sign very loudly. That was rather tedious for my parents, so I'm sure that's why they always made sure I had plenty of books to read!
Through my years of teaching, I have guided many students through sometimes thoughtful and sometimes precarious subject matter. Combine my love of reading with my experience as a reading teacher and my masters in Curriculum and Instruction, and I believe you'll find that I'm prepared and pumped-up to help your student's reading experience be the best it can be!
