Class Experience

In this on going class, students will experience the fun of dance and creative movement. Dancers will be lead through warm up and stretches, ballet activities, creative movement games, and will learn short dances. Beginning ballet positions, steps, and terminology will be introduced and students will have the opportunity to express their individuality with special solo moments throughout the lesson.
The last five minutes of class are used as an informal ‘Show and Tell’ time. This is an opportunity to converse and connect. Dancers are invited (but not required) to share something with Miss Jenny. Some dancers have things they want to tell me, others share toys, stuffed animals, and even pets:).

Dance With Me consists of the following general schedule each time it meets:
Warm-up stretches which are done every class
Ballet technique: port de bras arm positions, plies/tendu exercise, ABC sways and passes, Nutcracker first and second jumps
-Some or all of these are done every class. These activities introduce dancers to ballet technique and terminology. I always mix ballet
terminology with words and descriptions to help the dancer understand what we are doing.
Games: The Teddy Bear Dance, Head and Shoulders, The Hokey Pokey, The Freeze Dance, etc...
-A minimum of one game is done during class.
Creative Movement: dancing like animals, dancing like a feather, dancing like a season, etc...
-A minimum of one creative movement activity is done during class
-When we dance like different animals, we get to learn and practice different ballet steps
-Activities such as dancing like a feather or a winter storm give students the opportunity to let loose, be creative and express
     themselves
Mini Dances: dancers get the chance to perform a routine to a song. The routines consist of movements that have been introduced earlier in class and different actions. The movements are done in a repetitive fashion to a song which allows the dancer several opportunities to try them. I have a set of dances that I rotate for students who attend class regularly and add new ones periodically.
You might hear/see your dancer perform a dance to songs like "You Are My Sunshine", "Five Little Monkeys", "Ladybug Picnic", "It's a Small World", "Get On Your Feet", "Zip A Dee Doo Dah", and more
-A minimum of one mini dance is done during class

I use a combination of typical kid music and music from classical ballets during class. There are activities that are done every week to provide structure, routine, and familiarity for the young dancer. This also provides a baseline for parents to see how their child is growing and developing in the class. Other activities, games, and dances are rotated along with new additions that are incorporated to balance structure and routine with variety for regular attendees.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
It is important to have an open space for your dancer to move during class. Ballet shoes are recommended, but not required. If the dancer is on a hardwood type floor, they should wear ballet shoes or some type of tennis shoe to prevent slipping. Students are welcome to have a water bottle close by during class.
Supply List
Open space
Ballet shoes suggested, but not required
Small stuffed animal for the 'Teddy Bear Playtime' song
Scarf or towel for the 'Waving My Scarf' song
Water bottle close by
Of note...I use a variety of props in class. They vary depending on that day’s activities but may include:
*A wand
*Feathers
*Animal headbands like unicorns, bunnies, frogs, bats, deer and more.
Students do not need these items. Sometimes they get excited when they see me using them if they have similar items at home and run off to get theirs. If you have these types of items, feel free to have them in your dancer’s space during class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I studied all styles of dance beginning at age five and attended dance conventions from some of the top teachers and choreographers in the industry. I taught all styles of dance to all ages for over fifteen years at dance studios, park and rec programs, and independently. My speciality quickly became preschoolers and I also developed a dance class experience for parents and toddlers to enjoy together in 2006 when I was seven months pregnant with my second child who is currently studying with the School of American Ballet in New York City.
I have attended the Dance Teachers Summit in New York City, taking classes and seminars with some of the top children's dance teachers in the country. I am fortunate to have access to a vibrant arts community in New York City which constantly inspires my teaching.
