Class Experience

This is a daily, 4-week shared reading course. Shared reading is an important part of the balanced literacy approach. Set aside time in your learner's day to read text with me and practice literacy skills. I provide a safe venue for them to practice in this very small and intimate group class. This class size is purposely made small so that I can give each child individual attention so I can work on their individual strengths and also focus on what seems to challenge them.

I will be sharing the poems through Google slides to read together. We will read individually, in pairs or as a group. Learners will be muted from time to time to give others a chance to read carefully and so I can listen to each one. They will also be provided with their own worksheets and handouts (this will be available in the classroom upon enrollment) to be distributed to the learners weekly. They are expected to compile each 8.5x11" poem in folder so they always practice at home.

We will meet Monday through Friday and each day we will have a task to complete after reading the poem daily. At the end of the course, students will be able to compile all their poems into a lap book. This can be read over and over again during independent reading time even after the course has ended.

Below is the curriculum schedule for each week and day:

I will go at the students pace until mastery. If students are working well and moving forward, I have prepared a wide range of extension activities to always keep them challenged. There will be no fluff time.

WEEK ONE
Theme: The Ocean

WEEK TWO
Theme: Pets

WEEK THREE:
Theme: Family

WEEK FOUR:
Theme: Fall

DAILY TASKS:
Mondays: Poem read aloud and illustration (learners must have coloring materials every Monday)
Tuesdays: Poem read aloud. Sight word hunt.
Wednesdays: Poem read aloud. Phonics activity

While this is a beginner reader's class, students must know their phonemic sounds.
