In this class students will learn how to make classic American buttercream icing from scratch and decorate a cupcake to look like a beehive with a fondant bee decoration. With each step I will demonstrate and students will follow along at home: Step 1: Create buttercream icing. Step 2: Coloring the Icing. Step 3: Put icing in a piping bag with a tip. Step 4: Pipe icing onto the cupcake. Step 5: Shape and mold Bee for decoration. Learners will need to know how to measure and use a mixer prior to class.
Learning Goals
-Students will learn how to create American Buttercream Icing.
-Students will learn how to color and pipe icing.
-Students will learn how to color, shape and mold a bee from fondant.

Parental guidance is recommended when using the knife and mixer.
Supply List
Students will need the following: -Mixer -4 sticks of unsalted butter -1 (2 lb) bag of powdered sugar -water -vanilla -large spoon -spatula/scraper -teaspoon measuring spoon -toothpick -cutting mat -piping bag -rolling pin -shortening -X-Acto knife OR a small sharp knife 6-10 pre-made cupcakes (not iced or decorated) 1-small package of white pre-made fondant 1-black gel food coloring 1-yellow gel food coloring Please note the icing recipe will make enough icing for 24 cupcakes. So your baker will have several opportunities to create the perfect bumble bee!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a 7th grade science teacher for 19 years! I have a Bachelors Degree in Science and two Masters degree's in Middle School Eduction. I love to watch students explore, learn and experience the world of science! I will be teaching classes on Outschool that incorporate fun with learning. We will model, experiment and explore how science is all around us. I will demonstrating fun science experiments that students will want to show their friends! We will be using household items to learn basic and intermediate science concepts that explain some pretty cool science tricks!
When I'm not teaching, I'm a mom to two beautiful children ages 22 and 13. You can also find me on the Food Network television show "Cake Wars"! My daughter and I appeared on 3 different episodes; Shrek, Happy Feet and Smurfs! We won two out of the three competitions! I will be offering several baking courses throughout the semester! I love to share our TV experiences and fun tricks we learned while filming for Food Network!
