Class Experience

This is FLEX Course No. 2 in a series of Cursive Handwriting Practice sections. (FLEX courses for print handwriting and for other age groups are also offered.) Please choose from the sections that are offered. Each may be taken one at a time or several simultaneously and in any order of your choice.

Each lesson will include a video demonstration (approximately 20 minutes in length) and corresponding resources. Those resources might include links to websites, videos, and articles; notes prepared by the teacher; and/or a worksheet. Examples of the resources used during the lessons include (1) a photo of each horse breed on the list to be copied; (2) videos of the song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” being sung on stage by Frank Sinatra and by baseball fans at Dodgers Stadium for the lesson in which students copy the lyrics of the song; and (3) an audio clip of one familiar classical song by each of the composers on the list to be copied.

One discussion starter or question will accompany each project. For example: The discussion question for the tree species list project is “What trees can be found in your neighborhood? Elm? Oak? Pine?” For the Albert Einstein project, students will be asked to share what they know or to guess what might be true about the scientist.

Every learner will have the opportunity to submit their work for review and to receive suggestions from the teacher for possible improvement. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to have their work displayed on the classroom page.

Each section contains four lessons (one lesson per week for four weeks). The handwriting activities in this section are as follows:

Lesson 1: We will copy the lyrics of the well-loved showtune, "A Spoonful of Sugar," sung by Julie Andrews in the 1964 film, "Mary Poppins," by Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman.

Lesson 2: We will copy the lyrics of the well-loved showtune, "My Favorite Things," written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein for the 1959 Broadway production of the "Sound of Music."

Lesson 3: We will copy the lyrics of the song, "When You Wish Upon a Star," by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington, written for Walt Disney’s 1940 adaptation of "Pinocchio." The original version was sung by Cliff Edwards in the character of Jiminy Cricket, and the song has since become the representative song of The Walt Disney Company.

Lesson 4: We will copy the lyrics of the song, "Proud Corazón," written by Germaine Franco and Molina Gonzalez for the 2017 Disney/Pixar award-winning film, "Coco."
Learning Goals
Cursive Handwriting Practice appeals to a wide variety of students, each with unique goals. The course is popular among learners who struggle to achieve legible handwriting and, therefore, usually dread having to practice. It is also an enjoyable, creative outlet for young artists who gain much satisfaction from forming letters and punctuation symbols.

For a learner's handwriting skills to improve, practice is required. Extra, focused work is often essential for students with dysgraphia or other fine motor skills challenges, those of whom are left-handed, and those whose training in cursive has been sporadic. Handwriting exercise for these learners can also be very frustrating and tedious and, therefore, it is difficult to find the motivation to hone their skills. For these reasons, great care has been taken to create a curriculum in which handwriting practice is enjoyable -- and perhaps even fun!! -- so that learners are more likely to practice often and for longer periods of time and so that all students – whether handwriting challenged or a budding calligraphy artist – will be inspired.

Supply List
Learners will need a pen or pencil and some paper. There are no other requirements for supplies; however, I recommend the following:

ruled paper (preferably ½” ruled, or larger)
ballpoint or gel pen

It would also be nice to have basic art supplies handy to frame class projects for display at home or to create greeting cards and gifts using class projects.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Western Governors University
When I attended elementary school in the 1970s, neat, legible, printed and cursive handwriting was an important part of our education. I received good grades then and compliments throughout my life on my beautiful penmanship. In recent years, I have also dabbled in hand lettering and calligraphy art and have participated in events such as The Graceful Envelope Contest and IAMPETHvirtual2021. I am a member of IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting).

I have taught 15 to 45 handwriting lessons and handwriting practice sessions per week ("Tails and Curls: The Art of Cursive Handwriting," "Penmanship Pals: Print," "Penmanship Pals: Cursive," and private tutoring) for almost five years on Outschool. Your students will find me to be patient, cheerful, and fun.
