US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner - Advanced Level
In this ongoing class, learners will have the opportunity to learn about current events from all around the world. We will explore different ways to learn about current events online such as videos, articles, podcasts, journals, and blogs. Our sources will also come from all over the world, exposing learners to different ideas and perspectives. As you can see in our materials list section, our range of sources includes: BBC, YouTube, Al Jazeera, People's Daily, Daily Wire, MSNBC, All Sides, and the Associated Press. The combination of these sources gives a balanced view of each issue. Each week, the learners will share issues they've seen in the news that are of interest to them. Discussions can include learners asking questions, sharing their own views on the subject, debating the different sides of the issue, and talking about if or how this issue impacts their lives directly. The teacher will pose questions to learners in a Socratic seminar style in order to have them think critically about the material. No experience or prior knowledge is necessary for the class. As long as your learner is ready to engage and participate (in the ways they find comfortable), they will have a place in our discussion group! With regard to my teaching style, you can see that I use the terms 'we' and 'our' when talking about class, and that's because I strive to maintain a casual and comfortable atmosphere where students are free to explore their ideas and thoughts without fear of judgment.
