Class Experience

Hello, learners and parents! My name is Melissa Tidmore and I have been an avid crafter my whole life! I enjoy many areas of crafting but have been practicing crochet since the age of 7. For several years, I traveled to different craft fairs and had my own small business called "The Loopy Mama." While this was great fun, lately, I mainly crochet for fun. I hope to teach young children the fun and useful skill of crochet and help them learn a skill that is both entertaining and beneficial. Crochet helps encourage creativity and helps develop hand-eye coordination and even pattern recognition and counting skills. Although this class is only the introduction, I plan to add later classes that will cover more advanced stitches and fun patterns and skills. In this first section, I plan to teach the basic chain stitch as well as, a slip stitch, a single crochet, a half double crochet and a double crochet. In upcoming sections, the students will learn to expand on these stitches and use patterns to create designs. I tend to be a bit of a goof in class and truly enjoy teaching students, class with me will be both engaging and fun and students will fully be involved in the learning process. I will have two cameras so that students can see both my face as well as a closer shot of my hands. They will be crocheting stitch-by-stitch with me during class. At the end of the lesson, they will even be able to show off their finished projects to their new friends! For this class, students will need a thick yarn with very little texture and a chrochet hook, 6mm to 7mm in size. This hook is the easiest size to lean with and a simpler color and texture yarn will allow them to see the stitches better. I love the "light bulb moment" when they learn something new and are able to branch out and apply their own spin and creativity. I hope to see you in class soon!

Supply List
Students will need a skein of yarn, preferably one that is thicker without much texture. A heavily textured yarn makes it difficult for a new learner to see the stitches correctly. They will also need a 6-7mm crochet hook. These two items are fairly inexpensive and can be found at any hobby store or even many super centers.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, all! My name is Melissa Tidmore, mother of 3 wonderful children and a wife to an awesome husband. I have a degree in Business Administration and my certification in education to teach all subjects grades k-8. I graduated college with the title of "most outstanding student" in the school of business and have always loved school! I worked for 7 years as a public school math and science teacher and 5 more tutoring on an individual and small group basis. My main areas of focus are secondary math, but I have taught all levels. I LOVED teaching in the school system but left the education field to stay home with my children. I have since been homeschooling my own children as well as teaching secondary math in several co-ops in my area. I have taught all grades from K-Algebra 2! I particularly enjoy showing children that subjects such as math are not only applicable but also can be understandable and fun. In class, I often say "math should make sense." I love seeing the "light-bulb moment" for my students and I hope that they also walk away with an enjoyment that they may not have had before.

In addition to my Business degree, I also have a license as a cosmetologist-although it is more of a hobby these days. For a short while, I was in this field full time and still enjoy it as a hobby. I enjoyed creating off-the-wall styles, worked in runways shows and was in a magazine featuring Avante Garde styles. Though I have all but hung up my shears, you will still see me playing with hair any chance I get.

My hobbies include teaching, reading, gardening, doing crafts of all kinds, crochet, hair, and spending time doing anything adventurous and fun with my family. I especially love outdoor activities!

I truly try to have fun in all that I do and I feel that a smile is never wasted. I hope to see you and your student in my class soon!
