Think of theme as the creme filling in a cupcake. As a teacher, I find that theme is an area that students struggle with. I can't wait to help students understand theme and apply it. This is an important reading skill that will carry them throughout their ELA career. Week 1: We will define topic, create a list of different topics and then practice identifying topics in text. We will end the session with a game. Week 2: We will define theme, create a list of different themes and then practice identifying themes in text and video. We will end the session with a game. Week 3: Students will practice identifying a topic and theme statement for a variety of texts. We will play a game theme vs topic. By the end of this course, students will be able to identify theme and support the theme with evidence.
