Creative Writing: How Food, Nutrition and Writing Can Come Together is a self-paced course that explores the wonderful world of food literacy and nutrition. Through a series of creative writing and storytelling exercises, interactive activities, and homework assignments, students will develop their understanding of the five food groups, learn about nutrition and healthy eating, and explore the cultural and emotional significance of food in our lives.
Learning Goals
1. Students will be able to identify and describe different foods, their parts, and where they come from.
2. Students will be able to write a short story or poem using food as a main character or plot point.
3. Students will be able to draw a balanced plate with a variety of foods from the five food groups.
4. Students will be able to write a reflective paragraph about a food-related sensory experience and describe its significance in their life
Syllabus
12 Lessons
over 12 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to Food Literacy
* Topic: What is Food Literacy?
* Activity: "Food for Thought" scavenger hunt - explore the kitchen and identify different foods, their parts, and where they come from
* Creative Writing: Write a story about a favorite family meal, using descriptive language to describe the food and setting
* Homework: Share a photo of your favorite family meal
Lesson 2:
The Five Food Groups
*Topic: Understanding the Five Food Groups
*Activity: Food group sorting game - sort foods into different categories (grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein)
*Activity: What do you eat when.....
*Activity: You are stranded on a desert island and need food to survive.
Lesson 3:
Nutrition and Healthy Eating
* Topic: Understanding Nutrition and Healthy Eating
* Activity: "My Plate" activity - draw and label a plate with a balance of different foods from the five food groups
* Creative Writing: Write a story about a character who makes healthy choices to eat well
Lesson 4:
Food and Culture
Topic: Exploring Food and Culture
* Creative Writing: Write a story about a food-related cultural tradition or celebration
* Homework: Upload a recipe related to food and culture
