Creative Writing: Having Fun With Anachronisms

Elon Musk writing with a quill pen... a Roman soldier using a washing machine... a Renaissance princess recording TikTok videos... these are all anachronisms! Sounds fun... let's come up with some more!

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
For this class, we'll gather up our chalk and wooden slates to write fun stories using anachronisms, just as students in the Middle Ages hopped on Zoom to learn!

Oh, wait; those would be examples of anachronisms! That means something in its wrong time or place. Sometimes writers and movie directors simply goof, like Shakespeare having a clock chime in "Julius Caesar" when clocks didn't even exist. However, when we intentionally use anachronisms, we can have a lot of fun brainstorming what to put when and where... what if Marie Antoinette had social media? What if Marco Polo had GPS?

Idea generation is just half the fun, though, because then students will compose their own scene/paragraph(s) detailing the anachronism, written in a serious manner as though it's a completely normal slice of life!

Join this engaging class for an overview of anachronisms and some fun writing time.

Students are welcome to work on their writing outside class and submit after the class concludes for feedback.

Bachelor's Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities.

On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
