Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Part 1 is a prerequisite to this class if the student is younger than 8 years old.

We will begin the class by simply creating a story together as a class. The teacher will model writing sentences as the story develops. We will end the first day of class with a very short, completed written class story. On the second day, we will begin a second class story. The students will be encouraged to personalize their story as we go by adding some unique details to their story. Students will have the opportunity to share their stories with the class and they will be encouraged to read the stories to their family after class.

For this class, students need to have the ability to put words down on paper. Spelling words correctly is not critical at this point; simply having the ability to sound out words and write them down is all that is necessary. Part 2 is not a more advanced class than Part 1. This class is still a beginning writing class. Students will be given more opportunity to develop their own ideas in this class than they had in Part 1. This class will write on different topics than the Part 1 class and will move at a slightly faster pace because the students already know the routine. Hence, students need to have taken the Part 1 class before enrolling in the Part 2 if they are younger than 8 years old.

Parts 3-14 are available in an ongoing format or individually by request.
As you work your way through this 14 part series, here are some things to consider.
1. Part 1 must always be taken first for six and seven year olds.
2. Parts 2-4 can always be taken in any order.
3. Part 5 is a writing workshop. The teacher will discuss (review) with the students capitalization, commas in a series, and the use of quotation marks when including dialogue in a story.
4. Parts 6-14 can always be taken in any order.
5. If you choose to do the ongoing option (Parts 2-14 ongoing), then be aware that the student may enter the ongoing session at any point in the series (feel free to message the teacher to see where in the series a particular class is.) For some students, this is fine. But other students I will direct to my individual Parts 2-4 classes because they are not quite ready for Parts 5-12.
6. Parts 6-12 are different than Parts 2-4 in the fact that I give the students the first sentence in Parts 2-4. In Parts 6-12 the students are encouraged to create their own first sentence.
7. The teacher's Writers Club class follows this 14 part Creative Writing Series. The Writers Club Class is only available to students who have completed at least nine parts of the Creative Writing series. The Writers Club class is 25 weeks (approximately 6 months) of weekly creative writing.
