Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
In each class, students will be given the beginning of a story to use as a prompt to continue writing their own creative short story, which they will share aloud at the end of class.

This class will meet on an ongoing basis, each class with the same structure, but with a new story beginning each week.

*Each week the story beginning will be different. A random student will choose an object on the screen to "open" which will reveal the story beginning prompt for that week. Since the story's beginning is chosen at random during class time, there are no pre-determined topics to list in advance.*

Class Activities:

- Introduction

- Choose the story beginning:
A student will be randomly chosen to choose an object on the screen (such as a gift box or an object related to a theme - winter: a snowman, a snowflake, a tree, an ornament, a sled, etc.). When the item is clicked on, it will reveal the story beginning we will use that day in class.

- Brainstorm ideas:
We will brainstorm some ideas about the story beginning aloud to help students develop ideas for their stories before writing.

- Writing time:
Students will write their stories in a private (just one student) breakout room for 10 to 20 minutes. The time given may be different each week and depends on the number of students in class and how long other activities take.

- Sharing time:
Students are welcome to read their stories aloud (though not required). The teacher and students will offer positive comments, emojis, and reactions to each other. After students have shared their stories, the teacher will often share a story she has written about the picture as well! Students are free to leave when class time is over or stay a few extra minutes to hear the teacher's story.

*Please note that this class does not focus on helping students to improve spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, or other writing mechanics.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their creative writing skills, oral reading and speaking, and expand their imaginations as they create their very own short stories.
