50 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1-2 hours per week. Optional homework will be given at the end of each class as a means of using the knowledge gained to engage in different activities with family members. These exercises are not mandatory for the subsequent classes, but are helpful in letting the student practice the material or concepts that were presented with parents or siblings.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Read any good books lately? Come and tell us about them! What characters are your favorite, which moments made you laugh or cry, and what made it impossible for you to put it down. Reader and writers alike will join together in this discussion class to learn and share ideas about creative writing. In this ongoing course, we will come together to talk about stories you may be writing or books you may be reading and dive into the depths of what creative writing is all about from both ends as readers and writers. The approach in this class will be centered upon a thematic schedule, grouping ideas from multiple sources together as opposed to chronological books. Each week we will have a planned agenda and discussion points, to which students can enter into an open-ended conversation and share their ideas, thoughts and opinions with one another. At the end of each lesson, students will be asked to provide their own opinions or insights on future topics, focusing in on what interests them most as I create the curriculum based on students' needs.
Learning Goals
This class is focused on discussion, classmate support and encouraging learning through fun and personal experiences. By the end of this class, students will have expanded their knowledge and understanding of multiple theories and ideas in creative writing techniques, learned about strategies and writing tools from popular young adult novels, and enhanced their abilities to lead as well as support a conversation.
