Writing is a superpower! In this multi-day camp writers will unlock this power by creating stories that are meaningful to them while working on the writing traits of ideas and organization. Each class will be structured with a warm up, focused writing activity, time for drafting and the option to share work with the class. Writers will be encouraged to continue developing their work after class and will have the option to send their writing to the teacher for feedback. The final class will be a celebration of work with the opportunity to share a finished story with the class. Day 1: Creating Characters (handouts provided) Every story has a superhero and a villain. As a class we will brainstorm characteristics for these characters to use in our stories with the handouts provided. Writers will end class with a quick write to a superhero themed story starter. Day 2: The Perfect Plot Writers will use their superhero and villain characters to create a story. Essential plot elements such a setting, problem, and story starter will be provided. Time will be spent brainstorming ideas as a class. Through guided practice writers will work on drafting a beginning, middle, and end to a story using these plot elements. Writers will be encouraged to continue developing their stories after class and will have the option to send their work to the teacher for feedback. Day 3: Superhero Scribble Story Writers will begin by drawing a scribble on a blank paper. This will be the beginning inspiration for a superhero themed illustration. After completing their illustrations, writers will have the option to extend this work by creating a story starter inspired by their art. Writers will choose to begin drafting this new story or return to their perfect plot work from day 2 for the remainder of class. Writers will be encouraged to continue developing their stories after class and will have the option to send their work to the teacher for feedback. Day 4: Open Mic Celebration Writers will have the floor for this final class! An open mic celebration is an informal and relaxed way for writers to share (a part) or entire finished story with the class. Writers will also practice active listening by providing compliments and asking questions to each other. This fun celebration is the perfect way to celebrate the accomplishments of each other as writers. ****** All writers work at different paces. The art of writing involves critical thinking and revision; some writers will finish a draft connected to this class while others may choose to continue developing their work beyond our time together. Writers should be independent in developing sentences to enjoy this class. Writers will be encouraged to continue developing their stories and will have the option to send the teacher an image attachment for feedback. Grammar, mechanics and spelling will not be the focus of this class. Creative Writing Camp for Superheroes is designed to spark creativity, discover story ideas, and inspire writers to continue working on stories that are meaningful to them as writers. ****** CLASS EXPECTATIONS/MUTING: Learners will be reminded of the expectations at the beginning of class and as necessary during the lesson. 1. Have fun writing! 2. Listen to others. (As writers it is important to listen to and respect the voices of others and to take turns sharing ideas.) 3. Unmute/mute as needed during class. (Writers are encouraged to share their ideas and voices during class and stay unmuted/muted as they see fit. To create the best writing environment for everyone writers will be reminded at the beginning of class to mute for loud or distracting background noises.) ****** REFUNDS & TRANSFERS: Per Outschool's limited refund policy: "Full refund within 24 hours of purchase or up to a week in advance of the class." If within the week, it is realized the learner will not be able to attend the class, please submit a transfer request from the classroom at least 24 hours in advance. This ensures another learner interested in the class has enough time to enroll. In extenuating circumstances that are within 24 hours of the class time please contact me; I will do my best to support one-time exceptions for your learner and family. Refunds are unable to be processed after the class has met. Thank you for your understanding! Please test Zoom before class. Once class has begun my focus is with the learners present and the lesson in progress. I am unable to access conversations or classroom comments on Outschool during class. ****** CLASS CANCELLATIONS: If a class has not met the minimum number of enrollments, it is subject to being cancelled. I will send a message asking if you would like a transfer to another date and time or a full refund if the class is cancelled. Automatic refunds are issued for no responses after original class start time.
