1. Students will establish and grow their creative writing skills by applying writing techniques discussed in class. 2. Students take away key skills to master public speaking and performance. 3. Students will learn about various performance styles by watching and listening to videos. 4. Students will build self-confidence by implementing skills in their own performances.
My contribution as an educator comes from my insistent need to empower young people with the tools that helped me identify my exact voice: creative writing and performance. As an accomplished, and published, poet and spoken word artist, I plan to use both my honed writing voice and my extensive performance experience (as well as a diverse canon of words from other authors) to introduce students to the multi-faceted world of creative writing, performance art, and public speaking. My hope is that through these topics, students will gain a breadth of knowledge in writing, confidence, and speaking, and will be inspired to investigate their own identities and voices.
Students will be given weekly writing assignments based on overview and discussion. Students will be required to submit writing assignments of no more than 10 lines in length, regardless of writing style. Lastly, students will be required to view and/or listen to possible literary performances. All assignments are to be completed on an individual basis and should take no more than 30 mins per assignment.
The instructor will provide: slides for each overview session, writing assignments and prompts, as well as the links to listen and watch examples of performances online on National Poetry Out Loud website. No materials will need to be purchased by students for this course.
Learner progress is assessed through student contribution in discussion, writing assignments, and student ability to apply constructive critique in performance.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be occasionally directed to watch, read and/or browse writing and performances on the National Poetry Out Loud website found here: https://www.poetryoutloud.org.
