Class Experience

In this 3-part introductory course to the concepts of value, students will learn what value is, how it is created, and why it is important in art.
Basic drawing tips, tricks and techniques will be shared.
The different types of drawing pencils and pencil grades will also be introduced by way of handouts, video links and worksheets.

Class 1: Following student/teacher introductions, students will learn the vocabulary associated with value and why value is important in art. They will be taught the following; value scale, gradation, range of value, contrast, tone, local value, highlight, reflective light, and cast shadow. The difference between the terms 2-dimension (2-D) and 3-dimension (3-D) in art, will also be covered. These concepts will be discussed to explain how value is used to create the illusion of depth, light, and 3-dimensional form, on a 2-dimensional surface. This first class will be given with a combination of lecture to teach the vocabulary, images showing examples of value, and drawn examples created during class.

Class 2: Following the guidelines and concepts they have learned in class 1, students will be instructed on how to make their own value scale, practice gradation, and create the illusion of different 3-D forms.

Class 3: Combining all that students have been taught, they will create their own drawing, focusing on “value” to enhance the illusion of light and depth within their work of art.

*Students will be given the option to choose their own project idea for class 3, or pick from examples provided.*

No background knowledge is required for this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
From a very early age, art has been a passion of mine and has always been an unveiled talent. I began with self-developed skills, and as my passion grew, I started seeking formal education to further develop my techniques and proficiency. I earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, where my focus in electives curriculum, revolved around any available art classes. I also attended the University of Wisconsin- Platteville, where my course load was based around fine arts classes. My goal is to make a fun and relaxed environment where learners can be creative and expressive with art.
