In this lesson, students will be introduced to drawing a character of their own creation. We will talk about how to take what we see in real life to create a unique character. We will start by looking at the image of an animal's face and talk about how we could turn it into a unique character by focusing on different features and how to change them a little or a lot. Once the animal (our new character) is created, we will talk about how to portray six different emotions on the face. We will group these emotions by groups of two faces drawn side by side, two faces per piece of paper. We will focus on comparing the three groups of similar emotions: 1. Happy/Excited 2. Sad/Worried 3. Angry/Confused. With these groups of facial expressions side by side on each paper, we will then explore the similarities and differences these facial expressions show and how they show them. Everyone will be asked to talk about what they notice about the different facial expressions. Everyone will also have the opportunity to draw another emotion/expression that we do not cover in class if they wish.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to recognize what changes are made to the face that shows different emotions. We will focus mainly on the six emotions listed and what parts of the face are used most to convey those feelings.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Abigail and I specialize in story-telling through writing and illustrating. I love creating characters and personalities for my own stories and showing others how to do the same.
Some of my teachings include:
• Character Creation: How to describe your character’s personality as the story unfolds
• Illustration of Character: How transfer the image in your mind onto paper or create until your character shows up
• Fantastic Facial Expressions: How to draw different facial expressions to show the emotions of your created character
• The Writing and Illustrating Process: How writing can inspire the illustrations and how illustrations can inspire the writing
• The Hero of the Story: How to find the real hero of your story and what makes them the hero
• The Five Parts of a Plot: How to create the five different parts to a story to create one clear plot
I have worked with kids for about twenty years. This includes babysitting from age twelve on, teaching art lessons throughout summers in my teens and twenties, being an English teacher’s assistant in Switzerland for a year, and currently an ESL and beginners German tutor in America. I love sharing what I know to help others, especially when it comes to creativity and story-telling. Stories help us learn, understand, and process the world we live in. Whether it’s made-up or an actual event, I love making stories come to life through written words and imaginative drawings. Everyone has a story to tell and I want to encourage people tell their stories through writing and illustrating, for their own enjoyment or to share with the world. I want people to be excited about what they have to say, create, and share because the world needs all of us!
I have two self-published children’s books and many more in process. I have been creating stories since age eight and always will. I would love to also encourage the next generations to start capturing their own stories now and enjoy where it might lead them. My books have already taken me places and introduced me to people I would not have otherwise gotten to know.
Thank you for visiting my bio and I hope to see your child in one of my classes soon! Let’s create what’s coming next in this world!
