Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
In this one time course, we will explore math talk strategies, critical thinking, and math reasoning through open-ended math inquiry tasks. These are tasks that have multiple entry points, so students are able to solve no matter their level of proficiency. Students will be encouraged to think creatively, consider new perspectives, share their ideas, debate respectfully, and have fun with math!

What will be taught?
Math talk strategies, problem solving strategies, and critical thinking as it pertains to solving open-ended math problems

Class structure:
-5 minutes: Quick icebreaker/get to know you game
-5 minutes: Warm up - quick math thinking activity
-10 minutes: Direct instruction on math talk strategies
-5 minutes: Practice activity with new math talk strategies
-10 minutes: Present math inquiry task about a baker and the amount of various cakes she needs to make for an upcoming bake sale. Give students time to solve independently or with a partner in a breakout room.
-10 minutes: Share out of strategies using math talk learned earlier in lesson, discuss and compare ideas and new learning.

How will I teach?
My teaching style is very interactive. I encourage a lot of discussion and participation. Students learn best by sharing and listening to new ideas with each other! I keep my direct teaching short and concise. I ask a lot of probing questions, letting students do most of the talking. I model thinking out loud along side of students if they are stuck. My goal is to teach students HOW to think, not what to think.

I am looking forward to opening up the world of math thinking with your child in a fun and interactive way!

Hi There! My name is Niki Eickholt and I am a full-time 4th Grade teacher! I am excited to bring my passion for teaching to the students of OutSchool! I have been teaching elementary school for 11 years. I have my Bachelors Degree in regular education and special education for grades K-8. I also have my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.

As a teacher, I believe in creating learning opportunities for children that are authentic, collaborative, and engaging! My goal is not to teach students WHAT to think, but HOW to think. I want my students to learn how to discuss ideas thoughtfully, take risks, and be reflective learners. As a teacher, I strive to teach each of my students in the way I would want my own children to be taught.

In my free time, I love to be outdoors with my family, read, and travel! I love listening to music, doing crafts, and I am currently working on obtaining my recreational pilot's license!
