What will be taught? This course will detail the creation of fictional magic systems. The two most popular forms are the "soft" & "hard" magic systems. The course will detail how to create rational (or comically irrational!) systems that can be used in tandem with fantastical worlds created by your learner. What topics will you cover? As detailed above, learners can expect to cover various aspects of fantasy writing in regards to magic systems. These will include, but are not limited to the source of magic, the cost said magic incurs, how to utilize and manipulate it, it's origins within the learners fantastical world, as well as the gestures/words by which it is called upon. How is your class structured? My class is structured in a 50/50 model. I typically lecture for the first half (25 minutes) on the topics we will cover. Learners will be asked to take notes and/or consider how the topics covered can be utilized in their magic system. The second half will be a Q&A session alongside a detailing of the homework for that day. In short, each class will be the delivery of information, and its implementation in your learners fantastical minds. Learners are encouraged to draw up schematics, sketch the appearance their magics might take on, as well as read samples from recommended literature for inspiration. The final class will be comprised of a stress test/presentation of our magic systems based on the lecture and discussions held throughout the week. How will you teach? I will teach using various examples from popular fantasy. These will include the use of soft & hard magic systems from acclaimed fantasy novelists. These examples will be looked at in tandem with the worlds the magic resides within, and how that effects the properties and use of magic within that world. There are a few videos to watch, as well as a short essay learners will be asked to read by fantasy aficionados. What's your teaching style? My style is fun and creative. I've taught in the general & special education setting for years, and have zeroed in on what I love to teach kids and how to make it, not only fascinating, but a form of learning that encourages abstract as well as critical thinking. How much will learners get to interact with you and each other? Even though the first half of my classes are lecture-based, I always leave wiggle room for questions. I've been teaching for too long to think my lessons will survive first contact with my students. As a result, I remain flexible in the direction our classes go and how to redirect that conversation back to the topic for the day. Additionally, learners will have multiple opportunities to roundtable ideas in the latter half of each class as we discuss what we think would be a fun and insightful magic system. As mentioned above, learners will also have a fun presentation day during the last during which they can discuss each others magic systems. Is there any required experience or knowledge learners need? The best part about my class is that students can come in with a breadth of knowledge or none whatsoever and still be able to contribute equal amounts to the conversation. I often think that those without preconceived notions come to a class such as this with fresh ideas that aren't steeped within literature they've already read.
Learning Goals
By our third and final class, learners will be able to provide a detailed explanation of how their preferred magic systems works. I will also present each student with a obstacle/scenario in which they will have to use their magic system to solve the problem presented to them.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
While there are endless examples of magic in fantastical settings being used to violent effect, I will encourage my learners to consider the more practical and altruistic uses for a magic system i.e. civil engineering/construction, boosting the fertility of blighted crops, and so forth.
Supply List
I'd recommend a sketch pad for learners to provide a drawn explanation of a magic systems flow, logistics, and application. I will not ask that students purchase any course reading in order to pass my class. If they are interested in books to further their interests however, I'll be more than happy to make some suggestions!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
