Class Experience

The college application essay is different than other types of writing that are typically learned in high-school English courses and beyond, and this class is will help sophomores, juniors, and seniors to help make your essay stand out to when applying to college. Utilizing prompts from the Common Application, students will learn:

1) how to choose a topic based on the prompts
2) effective introductions and how to grab the attention of the reader
3) format of the essay utilizing a graphic organizer method for brainstorming
4) enhance writing using figurative language and description to bring writing to life and stand out to the reader (show versus tell)
5) see sample essays and revise bloopers before embarking on their own writing

At the end of the class, students will be emailed a checklist for revising their essay. The instructor will also proof essays and offer feedback and suggestions if submitted within a week of taking the class.

**It is recommended that the student takes the class Crafting the Common App Essay for College Admission: Private Tutoring & Feedback after this class to get more one-on-one revision help if necessary in a live, in-person class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a high school English teacher and journalism adviser for 14 years. I became familiar with the Common Application prompts during this time and have helped numerous students craft and revise their essays while applying to college over the last 14 years. I have also taught Senior English for 5 years and we wrote college application essays each year in this class. Writing and writing instruction has always been an area of expertise for me and something that has developed naturally. Helping students to understand the process by simplifying it into manageable steps has been something that I love to do.
