What’s included

1 live meeting
1 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.
Assessment
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
In this lesson, the students will learn about Pattern Recognition of the piece positions on the board. The ability to recognize familiar patterns is one of the key skills that players must learn to improve. The students will study typical checkmate patterns and learn to solve these puzzles when other positions are added. By recognizing these checkmate patterns, the students will be able to solve puzzles up to three moves ahead. At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to play chess against other Outschool students, or the teacher, on the chess.org website.

Learning Goals

The students will become stronger chess players as they learn about Pattern Recognition on the board and by playing chess games on-line.

Other Details

Supply List
Students should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.

I am a retired public school teacher of 26 years and currently am a Supervisor of Academic Programming for the Central New York Chess organization on Outschool (https://outschool.com/teachers/CENTRAL-NY-CHESS-INC?usid=wUq7nkLS&signup=true&authTrigger=follow_teacher&follow=true&utm_campaign=share_leader_link). I have taught children and adults in Beginning and Intermediate 1 Chess classes for 23 years in after school programs, summer Chess Camps, online in my Cool Chess classes and now for Central New York Chess. I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game! I teach One Time Cool Chess classes and Private and Multi-Day Classes with Central New York Chess. I enjoy Art, Chess, Scrapbooking, and Travel! I hope to see you in my chess classes soon!
