Beginner Level
This course is for ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS on the chess board. The students will learn all the names of the chess pieces, how they move, and will learn how to call out the moves of the pieces on each square. The students will learn the File letters and Rank numbers of the chess board. The students will learn how to set up the board correctly by understanding which side to set up the white pieces and which side to set up the black pieces. Students will learn that the chess board is a coordinate grid and will make connections to math. They will learn how to use Algebraic Notation to call out the moves of each chess piece by using the File letter and Rank number of each square.The students will begin to see sequences and patterns of how the chess pieces move. The students will also learn the proper placement of each piece on the chess board and which player begins the game. The students will begin to make predictions of outcomes based on moving pieces.
Homework Offered
Students will receive a chess puzzle homework sheet in a PDF format to be printed out. The chess puzzle homework sheet will be discussed in the last few minutes of class to make sure all students understand what to do.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home, with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Grades Offered

We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
ChessKid.com is an additional resource that can help the student to improve their chess skills. This website provides Chess Puzzles, practice against chess bots, and informative videos which are made by Grand Masters.
