Class Experience

In this four week FLEX class students will discover chemistry by playing (and learning) with food! We will cover the states of matter, solutions, elements, electrons, polymers and more. Each unit will focus on a new topic and include recorded lessons, learning activities, and easy to do kitchen experiments. Additionally learners will have the opportunity to explore chemistry with their classmates through group discussion and group class activities.

This course is designed to facilitate both student/student interaction in addition to student/teacher interaction. Emphasis is placed on meaningful interaction with peers through group evaluation of scientific findings. Learning is dependent on active class participation. For each experiment, students will form a hypothesis and share the results of their individual tests with the class while working through scientific process.

The teacher will be available throughout the week to guide activities, answer questions, and introduce new concepts. A complete list of supplies for the upcoming week will always be posted the previous Friday.

The following units will be covered in this FLEX class:
Unit 1- Matter : Some of the topics we cover in this unit are types of matter, changing states of matter, and non-newtonian fluids.
Unit 2 - Solutions : Some of the topics we will cover in this unit are solutions, concentrations, acids, bases, and moles.
Unit 3 - Chemical Composition : Some of the topics we will cover in this unit are the periodic table, electrons, molecules and diffusion.
Unit 4 - Chemistry and Your World : Some of the topics we will cover in this unit are the chemistry of foods, oceans, and recycling.
