Class Experience

This flexible schedule class allows students to follow along with pre-recorded videos teaching how to bake cookies. The flexible schedule class is a great format for baking because it allows students to follow along and pause as needed. We will use a different cookie recipe each week for four weeks. Ingredients are listed in the supply list, and they will also be posted at least one week before each video is released so that you have time to purchase ingredients.

Each Monday a new video will be posted. In the videos I will walk students through each step to bake cookies. We will use mixing bowls and either a hand mixer or a stand mixer, as well as an oven. Parent supervision is required during each class. We will go over some basic safety around the oven, the hand mixer and the stand mixer. Learners can complete the lesson and bake the cookies on any day that fits their schedule after the video is posted each Monday. Learners will post pictures and/or videos of their cookies in the classroom to show how they turned out. Each student will view the other students' pictures and videos, and respond to at least two of the videos/pictures. Students will comment on the differences between the final products that each learner posts.

The teacher will be available to answer questions via messages or in classroom comments throughout the week, and will get back to you as quickly as possible Monday-Friday. If your cookies do not turn out quite right, learners should post a picture or video of the final product or any part of the cooking process. The teacher will help to troubleshoot, and then the student can follow along with the video instructions again and make any modifications necessary.

Week 1: Chocolate Chip Cookies. We will learn the correct order to mix ingredients for cookies, and use a hand mixer or stand mixer to make the cookie dough. We will use our hands to roll the cookie dough into balls, place on the cookie sheet and bake in the oven. We will learn how to know when the cookies are done.

Week 2: Nut Butter Cookies. We will use nut butter to make cookies, again discussing the correct order of ingredients. We will use a hand mixer or stand mixer and then roll the cookie dough with our hands. We will use a fork to press the cookies, and note how this changes the shape of the cookies. We will also see the change from before to after the cookies bake.

Week 3: Funfetti Cookies. We will make a basic sugar cookie but add sprinkles for a party effect. We will roll cookie dough into balls by hand and then place them on the cookie sheet.

Week 4: Chocolate Sugar Cookies. In this recipe we will practice mixing dry ingredients separately. We will roll cookie dough into balls using our hands, and then roll the cookie dough in sugar and place on the cookie sheet.

After completing each recipe, students will post pictures and videos of their final product. Students will then look through the other students' posts and note any differences. We will discuss what could cause differences in each students' cookies, including things like altitude, cooking time, oven temperature differences, etc.

Hello! I am so excited to teach your child. I teach preschool and early elementary reading classes, and flexible schedule cooking classes. I have a degree in Elementary Education from Utah State University. I taught in Elementary Schools for 4 years before choosing to stay home with my daughters, where I spend a lot of time cooking and baking. I also spent a few months in Brazil where I taught English classes to children and adults. I love making learning fun! I look forward to seeing your child in my Outschool classroom!
