Class Experience

Lesson 1 will primarily serve to lay the groundwork for our roleplaying. We will discuss how to identify bullying behavior and how an imbalance of social or physical power is the the underlying root of a bullying situation. We will discuss the importance of using safe preventative strategies, such as seeking out helpful adults and staying near friends or other kids. And then will discuss the heart of the topic, which is developing strategies to handle the bully. We will talk about tone of voice, eye contact and body language when responding to a bully. We will cover a list of potential response tactics and how different responses can be appropriate at different times and with different people. We will discuss the target goal of each strategy and the importance of knowing when to use a given strategy. We will also discuss how each strategy varies in boldness and the learners level of confidence using the strategy. I will introduce several roleplaying scenarios and each learner will have the opportunity and will be strongly encouraged to participate in the role play. Learners are also strongly encouraged to suggest their own role play scenarios. Behavioral homework will be assigned, which will include practicing eye contact and firm voice, reviewing strategies and developing a comfort level with at least one response tactic.

Lesson 2 will occur a week later. We will review what we had learned the week prior and discuss any thoughts or changes that has occurred with each learner. I will provide an overview of the previously discussed response tactics and we will discuss the developing comfort level each learner has with the responses. We will get straight to roleplaying the techniques and tactics. I will ensure the class that we are in a safe space to practice being bold and this is the time and space to use our firm voices and strong presence. I will be a supportive cheerleader to each learner, while also offering constructive feedback regarding their ability to be firm and using the techniques. Each learner will be encouraged to be their strongest self, both in class and after.

This class is friendly to all students, including learners on the autism spectrum or with another special need.
