US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Every child and teen wants to feel connected to a community where they feel welcomed and accepted. Homeroom participants (ages 10-14) will have many opportunities to talk, listen, and practice conversation and communication skills in this highly engaging class. They will practice conversation skills, play interactive games, set goals, discuss topics that interest them, and build community when they meet each week in our homeroom class. They will create positive affirmations, practice mindfulness exercises, and engage in activities that increase self-confidence. This is not a weekly therapy group. The purpose of this group is to empower youth with communication skills and confidence to engage in conversations with one another. Extensive research shows strong relationships between academic success and students' experiences of strong, positive connections with peers and caring adults (Barnard, 2004; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Kekahio & Baker, 2013; Kirkland, 2020; McKown & Herman, 2020). Students who express positive connections with peers and adults, particularly in a homeroom environment, report higher self-esteem, stronger commitments to academic achievement, and positive attitudes towards themselves and others. In this class, I empower children with opportunities to build positive relationships with others. No prior experience or knowledge is needed for students to participate and enjoy this class.
Learning Goals
1. Practice communication and conversation skills.
2. Demonstrate mutual respect and kindness for other members of the group.
