In this fun 2-day class students become a part of a collection of scientists who have been chosen to assist a recently contacted group of Martian scientists. This class is DESIGNED FOR THE BEGINNING STUDENT of chemistry. No prior experience with the periodic table is required. For those students with an understanding of the periodic table, check out my other two classes: For the intermediate student: "Chemistry Students Are Constructing the Martian Periodic Table- Come Join Us!" For the advanced student: "Constructing a Martian Periodic Table for Aspiring Nobel Prize Scientists" Students will be paired with a “research partner” and provided a list of clues and a blank periodic table. Together they will use knowledge of the earthly periodic table to answer the clues and place the Martian elemental symbols into their correct locations on the table. Among the concepts that will be assessed with this learning activity are atomic structure, basic periodic table structure, and the periodic trends. Teaching will be done with brief interactive video lectures then students are assigned to small groups to complete the activity. I will monitor each breakout room to answer questions and provide feedback. Additional outside platforms used are Google Slides, Google Docs, and Edpuzzle. PREREQUISITE: None
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the elemental properties and basic trends of the periodic table. Concepts assessed are: periods, groups, atomic structure, basic periodic table structure, and the periodic trends.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings. After 25 years working in research and development at 3M, the Post-it note company, I am excited to return to my first love: teaching. With a bachelors degree in Chemistry, a Masters of Teaching degree, and a Chemistry 9-12 teaching license, I am well qualified to teach high school chemistry. In addition, I bring a passionate and experienced interest in collaborative learning with a current focus on teaching digital literacy skills. I invite you to check out those digital literacy skills on my capstone project: https://sites.google.com/hamline.edu/digilit-fun/home
As a life-long educator....
* I capitalize on teaching moments wherever they arise- guiding students in active learning- rather than reinforcing the mechanical ingestion of facts from a textbook.
* I design learning experiences that actively engage students at many levels. I strongly believe that having fun learning about things you are passionate about encourages a deeper desire for exploration and understanding.
* I’m an expert at creating and nurturing a student-centered classroom- preK thru adult; One in which students and teacher can can safely explore, experiment, collaborate, and learn WITH one another.
Something fun and personal? I'm an enthusiastic grandmother of 3 little boys, have played the 12-string guitar since I was 12 years old, and took up ballroom dancing at the age of 50.
