Conquering Spelling: Practice, Review, and Homework Help

This small group class can be used as a supplement or follow-up to my weekly Conquering Spelling class. We will review the weekly spelling rule, look at homework together, and get lots more practice applying spelling rules in a supportive, encouraging environment. Class is taught in a multi-sensory format, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading & spelling, which is helpful for struggling spellers and dyslexic learners.

What's included

1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. A Word List will be provided after each class with multi-sensory activity ideas to do with the words in the Word List. This is optional work. If a learner feels confident with the weekly spelling pattern, then this work is not needed and can be filed away for later review. However, if the spelling pattern isn't sticking for your learner, this Word List and activity ideas will be very effective in helping your learner increase their confidence and accuracy with the spelling pattern.

Class Experience

This small group class is a supplement to my weekly class, Conquering Spelling: Master Dependable Spelling Rules & Common Spelling Patterns (Ongoing), linked here: https://outschool.com/classes/conquering-spelling-master-dependable-spelling-rules-common-spelling-patterns-on-DaAXmGyZ.

Learners who struggle with spelling need explicit, systematic, and direct instruction of spelling rules and patterns. They also need lots of multi-sensory practice to get these spelling rules and patterns to stick. This class will provide you with that!

**Note that being enrolled in the weekly class linked above (currently or in the past) is a prerequisite for enrolling in this class.** You can use this class to supplement the weekly class or as a review once you have completed the weekly class.

In each class we will review the rule taught in the weekly class. Learners will have the opportunity (but it is not mandatory) to teach the spelling rule to the class and share examples of words that follow the rule. We will also get lots of practice applying the rule to spelling words, including dictation of words, oral spelling, and oral decoding. Additionally, we will review homework from the weekly class. This is a great time to ask questions about the words in the homework sentences and talk about why the words are spelled the way they are.

Spelling questions are always welcomed in class, and this small group setting is a great place to do that. When we can explain why a word is spelled the way it is, it helps us understand it better, remember it better, and not be as frustrated with spelling English words. Spelling can be frustrating, but the more control and understanding we have of spelling, the less intimidating it is. I love to help learners achieve this.

A supportive, positive, and engaging environment will be maintained throughout our class time, creating a safe space for all learners, especially those who need extra spelling support.

A Word List will be provided after each class with multi-sensory activity ideas to give your learner more exposure to the weekly spelling rule or pattern. This is optional work. If a learner feels confident with the weekly spelling pattern, then this work is not needed and can be filed away for later review. However, if the spelling pattern isn't sticking for your learner, this Word List and the activity ideas will be very effective in helping your learner increase their confidence and accuracy with the spelling pattern.

If you are looking for even more spelling practice, you could purchase this workbook: How to Spell Workbook 3 by Laura Toby Rudginsky & Elizabeth C. Haskell. It can be found on amazon. There are extra lessons, but each lesson covered in class will have 1 or more follow-up pages in the workbook.
